WASHINGTON - The Obama administration has reportedly proposed a new agreement on Syria to the Russian government for military cooperation against terrorists in Syria. Instead, the United States (US) called on Russia to put pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad to stop the bombardment of rebel groups backed by the US.
Quoted from the Washington Post, Friday (01/07/2016), the treaty proposal has been submitted to the Russian government earlier this week. The core of the agreement was the United States pledged to join the Russian Air Force in order to share and coordinate targeted bombing campaign against al-Nusra Front which is fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Instead, Russia should agree to press the Assad regime to stop the bombardment of Syrian rebel groups were not included in the list of terrorist groups. US will not give Russia the location of this rebel group in the proposal, but will determine the geographical zones safe from air attack Assad regime.
Initially, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter reject this deal. But in the end he had to accept a deal over the release of President Obama's decision. Meanwhile, State Department spokesman John Kirby refused comment regarding this agreement proposal, but still provide a defense against its basic principles.
"We have been very clear about the obligations of the Russian regime to ensure compliance with the cessation of hostilities. We have also been clear about the danger posed by Al-Qaeda in Syria to the national security of our own. We saw a number of steps to address both these issues," he said.
